Pattern History:
I’m a river smallmouth freak. My game is to try to create flies that mimic what spin fishermen use as well as the naturals smallies feed on. The Big Muddy in shad colors was designed to meet both. When wet, it’s a close match to profile of the very popular and productive plastic bait, the Fluke. I fish it on a sink tip line with a short flouro leader or a leader with a mini-lead head added (a la Harry Murray) and attach to tippet with a loop knot. Doing this, it’s broad head pushes water and comes as close to the side to side action of the Fluke as I’ve seen in a fly. It also was designed to with the belief that bigger patterns increase your chances of catching bigger fish. So, at 5″ in the #2 size, it’s big enough to make a nice meal for the bigger fish. I’ve been fishing it for 2 seasons now and I’ve have increased my average size as well as caught most of my personal best smallies with this fly.

Comments / Special Instructions:
Fish the Big Muddy on a sink tip line with a short flouro leader or a leader with a mini-lead head added (a la Harry Murray) and attach to tippet with a loop knot. I normally prefer to fish it down and across, raising and dropping my rod tip slightly as I strip to let it rise and fall. Let the fish tell you how they want it stripped and hold on!
